FOR COMING OF AGE AND OUR NEW YORK EROTIC ART FAIR WEEKEND

A cocktail reception, TOM OF FINLAND: COMING OF AGE — 21 will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2006, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, at the Charles Cowles Gallery, 537 West 24th Street, in Manhattan.

· A one-night-only exhibition. 21 original Tom of Finland drawings, never before seen in New York! The fundraiser/reception at the prestigious Charles Cowles Gallery, in the West Chelsea Gallery District, will showcase 21 of Tom of Finland’s finest works from the Foundation’s Permanent Collection. A special presentation by the Consul General of Finland, along with Finlandia cocktails, hors d’oeuvres by Taste Catering and a special performance art piece by KENiMATTix will make this benefit the event of the year.

· Tom of Finland is now included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)! Five original works by Tom of Finland were recently purchased by the Judith Rothschild Foundation and included in a collection of 1,500 significant 20th century drawings that has been gifted to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Tom’s work has been acquired for the permanent collections of many museums including: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the San Francisco Museum of Contemporary Art; the Chicago Art Institute; the Portland Museum of Art; the Kiasma, Finland’s Museum of Contemporary Art; and, now, the important Rothschild gift. Tom of Finland can no longer be considered an "outsider" but will be recognized for what he was: one of the historically significant artists of the 20th century.

· The Foundation is celebrating its 21st birthday! Touko Laaksonen, a.k.a. Tom of Finland (1929-1991), and Durk Dehner, Foundation Director, created the Foundation 21 years ago to preserve and document Tom’s work for future generations. Within a few years of its inception, reacting to the rampant spread of AIDS and the possible loss and destruction of important artwork, its mission was expanded to include the protection, preservation and promotion of all erotic art. The Permanent Collection, including original works by Tom and hundreds of other artists, comprises the world’s largest repository of erotic art.

“I know my little ‘dirty drawings’ are never going to hang in the main salons of the Louvre, but it would be nice if — I would like to say ‘when,’ but I better say ‘if’ — our world learns to accept all the different ways of loving. Then maybe I could have a place in one of the smaller side rooms.” Tom of Finland — 1991

COMING OF AGE is co-chaired by Brian Crede, Mark Nelson, and Gary Robinson. Tickets and Sponsorships start at $75, and may be purchased on the Foundation's Website or by calling 212.206.7579 or 213.250.1685.

The after party is at the Ninth Ave. Bistro where Will Clark will be hosting Porno Bingo. They'll be raising funds for the Foundation, and the Bistro offers special "shot" prices for those who come in leather. DVDs donated by Dark Alley. 693 9th Ave.

These fundraisers kick off five spectacular days of Tom of Finland in New York. The Foundation’s Sixth Annual New York City Erotic Art Fair Weekend starts with an Artist Reception on Friday, May 19 at 7:00 PM. The Fair will be open to the public on Saturday, the 20th, from noon to 6:00 PM, and on Sunday, the 21st, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center, 208 West 13th Street. Official Sponsors include the Center and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

Proceeds from these events will benefit The Tom of Finland Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
