Judging for Tom of Finland Foundation’s 8th Emerging Erotic Artist Contest (EEAC) is completed, and the Foundation derives great pleasure in presenting all the submissions, including the winning pieces, online for the public and press.

This year’s competition produced the usual range of fresh and challenging work from an international roster of contestants from the UK, Italy, France, Mexico, Portugal, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.S.

The entries showcase the continued vibrancy and creativity extant in erotic art, and artists thrive when they are supported in their development and when an international audience of peers, curators, and collectors see their work. Editors are warmly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by publishing the winning works. Contact us if you require higher resolution images than those offered on our website.

The past has proven that a good percentage of the winners have gone on to become recognized in their field. Past Contest winners include Hector Silva, Marc DeBauch, Patrick Lee, Darrell Boy Smith, Dragan and Jay Jorgenson.

This year’s Contest also generated an artistic controversy that we may rightly christen with that popular phrase “a teachable moment.” Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery, or of thievery, one may ask? When does homage cross the line into copyright violation?

The EEAC panel of judges deliberated this question carefully in light of Crack Takes Over Your Life, a painting by James Cooper, who based his work on an existing digital photograph by Joe Oppedisano.

Comments by the two artists involved, as well as the judges for the Contest, debate the question in the link that follows. Ultimately the work was allowed to stand as an illustration of the ongoing debate.

The winning works of art will be exhibited at the Foundation’s Annual West Hollywood — Los Angeles Erotic Art Fair Weekend, March 27-28, 2010 in West Hollywood Park. Many of the Contest entries are offered for sale; interested parties are invited to contact ToFF’s offices for availability and details.

The Foundation also wishes to thank its distinguished and diverse panel of judges: Kat Coric, Montreal; Dr. Laura Henkel, Las Vegas; Jay Jorgensen, Los Angeles; Marco Livingstone, London and Michael Taubenheim, Berlin. Their insight and erudition always enriches the dialogue that art creates. The judges biographies are available here.

Please contact us for any further information on how you can partner with Tom of Finland Foundation in furthering its mission. It is ToFF’s desire to document, conserve, collect and share.
