WARNING ABOUT E-MAIL ATTACHMENTS

The Tom of Finland Foundation rarely includes attachments with our e-mails - and never in our Dispatch e-news and Press Releases.

While we DO send attached files to various people in the course of our work, it almost always has been pre-arranged with the recipient either over the telephone or through previous e-mails. In other words, if you are NOT expecting an attachment from a member of the Foundation DO NOT OPEN IT, especially if it is a .ZIP file - which we do not use. Call the office at 213.250.1685 or write the person that supposedly sent the e-mail using one of our "real" addresses available on our Contacts Page. Do not use the "reply" function of your e-mail program or you may be falling into a trap.

Recently I have seen a major upswing in e-mails that have purportedly been sent from the Foundation, but are forgeries. Quite frequently, the attachment is a virus. It is very easy to "spoof", or falsify, a "From" e-mail address. (Many banks, eBay, Amazon, and other organizations are also spoofed, as most of you are quite aware.)

Some viruses propagate by using an infected machine's address book and even portions of previous e-mails to personalize the attack. So I urge extreme caution when opening attachments, even if they came from a friend. If a friend's machine becomes infected, it could send you a virus without their knowledge.
