OVER A QUARTER CENTURY OF DEDICATION TO PROTECTING, PRESERVING AND PROMOTING EROTIC ART.

GREETINGS FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

We are absolutely delighted at the great response we've gotten in terms of memberships. In the first quarter of this calendar year, money received from memberships totaled approximately 40% of what we brought in during all of 1999! We are very grateful to all those who became members of The Tom of Finland Foundation; your contribution at any level helps provide us with the means to fulfill our mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting erotic art.

IS THIS YOUR LAST DISPATCH?
The new data base is almost ready to put in place, and it will help to maintain all information on our members and friends. However, the cost of maintaining the mailing list in its current state has become excessive. The list presently stands at over 3,000, and with Dispatches being mailed quarterly, that's a lot of money! Many of you (and you know who you are!) receive the newsletter and notices of our events, yet you have not come forward to actively support us.

As you know, we are a non-profit organization and money from memberships constitutes a big part of our operating budget. I'm sorry to say that we can no longer afford to continue with the status quo. So if you have been on the mailing list for more than a year and have not yet joined the Foundation, this will be your last Dispatch! As always, a membership form is included and we strongly encourage you to fill it out and become an active participant in our mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting erotic art.

We also want to give a special thanks to those who contribute beyond the basic membership level. And so we plan to host two new annual “thank you” events: “Tom's Cocktail Party” will be in the summer, and will be held at Tom's house – now the Foundation headquarters – to honor those who contribute $100 or more per year. “Tom's Dinner Party” will be a winter event, also at the Foundation house, in which those who contribute $250 or more will be invited to dine and socialize.

Though these new parties will be smaller in scope than events such as “Tom's Bar”, we hope they will become prized traditions. We look forward to meeting and entertaining you – and hope many of you will consider upgrading your membership to be able to join us at these events! - - M.J.

FOUNDATION OPEN TO RECEIVE ART DONATIONS

Aaron Holliday In a tradition that goes back 1,000 years, "pillow books" were given to couples at marriage to teach them how to pleasure each other.

Silk pillow painting, early Twentieth Century, 11" x 11 1/2", donated to the permanent collection by Cathie Bagwell.

We wish to thank the many artists who have contributed works to the Foundation. Many of these contributions have been in lieu of membership dues, and are earmarked to be sold to raise much-needed funds. If you wish to join the Foundation, but are short on cash, a donation of artwork is very welcome.

As for our permanent collection, we very much want to expand our female and transgender collections, to include works by artists not currently represented, and to expand the number of works by particular artists.

If you wish to donate a work to the permanent collection, the procedure is to submit photos or laser copies of the works offered. We will respond in 30 days if we can accept the works. Donation to the permanent collection is, of course, counted as a tax-deductible contribution.

Donating to the permanent collection is an assured way to preserve your work and make it available to the public for viewing for future generations to come.

TOM'S BAR IN YOUR TOWN?!?

If you're from somewhere other than Los Angeles, it might be difficult for you to get to an event such as Tom's Bar. But if you'd like to have a Tom's Bar in your town, let us know and we'll try to arrange it!

We have had a number of inquiries from people around the country, wanting to explore the possibility of hosting fundraisers for the Foundation in their towns. Of necessity, these parties are smaller than the gigantic L.A. events, but they can be just as much fun. They give supporters around the country a great opportunity to meet and socialize with like-minded people, while supporting the Tom of Finland Foundation at the same time!

The Foundation would like to thank the people responsible for several such fundraisers which have already taken place: Vince Ed & the men from the Seattle Leather Core; artist Daryl Smith & John Marshall the manager of Black Eagle in Toronto; the owner of the Eagle Bar in Fort Lauderdale, Alan Kachin; and Scotty & Vince from Men in Boots for the Cellblock Men in Boots Party. Discussions are underway for other parties in Palm Springs and San Antonio, Texas, among others.

What does such an event require? Well, it varies from town to town, but basically you need a venue (such as a local leather bar or club) which is willing to participate, plus your desire to put the party together. We at the Foundation will offer as much help as we can. If you'd like to talk about the possibility of a Fundraiser in your town, e-mail us at tomfound@earthlink.net or give us a call at 213-250-1685.

Finally, we want to thank James Stone, the producer of Los Angeles' “Fetish Ball Weekend”, who turned his Friday evening gallery exhibition this June into a benefit for the Foundation. We netted $975.00, and also got to meet a number of new artists, and a whole new sector of the public. This follows a donation of $500.00 that James gave the Foundation in 1999.

THE LOUVRE
“I know my little ‘dirty drawings’ are never going to hang in the main salons of the Louvre, but it would be nice if — I would like to say ‘when,’ but I better say ‘if’ — our world learns to accept all the different ways of loving. Then maybe I could have a place in one of the smaller side rooms.” (1991)
