OVER A QUARTER CENTURY OF DEDICATION TO PROTECTING, PRESERVING AND PROMOTING EROTIC ART.
GREETINGS FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

by Mary Jane Richardson, Administrator

After several years as a volunteer, I became the Administrator of the Tom of Finland Foundation early in September, 1999. The months since have been a whirlwind - planning and executing the Erotic Art Weekend, concluding the “Emerging Erotic Artist Contest”, re-organizing the office, mailing membership letters, mailing artists' letters, mailing postcards, mailing, mailing, mailing - you get the picture.

As we enter the new century, we at the Foundation are filled with excitement. We are already planning the 6th Erotic Art Fair Weekend for October 13th - 15th, and hope to have a catalog available by summer, listing the participating artists and works available for sale for those unable to attend. We plan to create an Erotic Artist Hall of Fame, and induct a new member at each year's Art Fair. We plan to make Tom's Bar 2000, the annual celebration of Tom of Finland's birthday, the biggest party yet (This year to be held May 7th). We plan to publish the Dispatch more regularly, four times a year, with an edition of the Erotic Gallery by Mail 3 times a year on odd months from the Dispatch. We plan to seek sponsorships for the 2001 Emerging Erotic Artist Contest, and corporate underwriting for our fund-raising events, to maximize the impact of your donations. And we plan to run the Foundation office smoothly and efficiently to anticipate the needs of our members.

Check the Foundation Events Calendar for "Tom's Bar 2000" updates

As you can see, we are a small Foundation with big plans. And we need your help to make them happen. I have enjoyed meeting many of you in person, and talking with even more of you on the phone. If you think our mission - to preserve, protect, and promote erotic art- is important please consider the following:

• If you're not a member, JOIN. If you are a member, renew and upgrade your membership to the next level, or enclose an additional donation. If your company has a “Matching Gift Program”, sign up for it. If you'd be willing to host a fundraiser in your town, contact us. Every dollar helps, and every dollar donated is tax-deductible.

• Recruit a friend. Give membership info to your buddies, and encourage them to join. Or consider giving a Foundation membership as a birthday or holiday gift... don't they already have enough cologne?

• Bring a friend. How many times has someone told you about a terrific party or event after the fact, and you've thought “If only I'd known about it”? Don't do that to your friends - bring them along to Foundation events and parties: they'll have fun, they'll see the kind of work we do, and maybe they'll sign up.

• Consider becoming a volunteer. We always need people to work the events, but we also need volunteers on a regular basis during the year. The Foundation archives erotic art from around the world, and recording all donations takes time and effort. Also, to cut costs, we will be doing some mailings directly from the Foundation, which means we'll need stuffers, lickers, and stampers. Is there a better way to meet other great people than when you all pitch in for a common cause?

• Last, but not least, SPREAD THE WORD!! Our most important job this year is to make more people aware of the Foundation and its work. So tell everyone you know about us. If you have a friend at a newspaper, or radio or TV station, encourage them to do a story. If you know of a grant that might be available, or a corporate underwriter, tell us.

Help us make the Tom of Finland Foundation bigger and better.

ENCOURAGEMENT
"My drawings are primarily meant for guys who may have experienced misunderstanding and oppression and feel that they have somehow failed in their lives. I want to encourage them. I want to encourage this minority group, to tell them not to give up, to think positively about their act and whole being." (1990) — Tom of Finland
