Primitive man’s relationship to nature was at once intimate and transformative imbued with his own hope and terror -- divine.

Modern man’s scientific mentality has relegated such vision of nature to poets, artists and other symbolists interested in internal realities.

Surrealist painter Jose Lopes uses the spirits resident in natural image to evoke human states of being and becoming. In his exhibition, “Animist Eye,” Lopes presents powerful transformations which dramatize the beautiful, sometimes grotesque natural man.

THE LOUVRE
“I know my little ‘dirty drawings’ are never going to hang in the main salons of the Louvre, but it would be nice if — I would like to say ‘when,’ but I better say ‘if’ — our world learns to accept all the different ways of loving. Then maybe I could have a place in one of the smaller side rooms.” (1991)
