J. B. Harter Charitable Foundation
presents:
"Classicism Subverted"
Gay Art in the XXI Century

Roberto Rincon, Curator

The J.B. Harter Charitable Foundation and Studios Plat du Jour are pleased to announce "Classicism Subverted: Gay Art in the 21st Century" a group exhibition of nine international gay artists.

Internationally known art critic and historian, poet and photographer, Edward Lucie-Smith has accepted to write the introductory essay for "Classicism Subverted." The author of more than one hundred books, his biography of Joan of Arc, texts on sexuality in Western art and Ars Erotica (1997) have received wide critical acclaim. The theme of "Classicism Subverted" falls within Lucie-Smith's natural realm and he convincingly places gay nude art in the larger context of contemporary art. In his essay, he writes:

"The male homosexual sensibility is often perceived as being essentially passive – receptive rather than pro-active. If the gazer essentially controls what is being gazed at, gay art featuring nude or semi-nude male bodies occupies a paradoxical position in both the psychological and the artistic spectrum."

The images presented in this exhibition, give the viewer a sample of the diversity in the work of contemporary gay artists using the male body and its classical metaphors. The artists included in "Classicism Subverted" bring their own cultural background, training and experience, to produce works that are thought-provoking, playful, and lyrical.

The nine international artists selected for the exhibition represent four countries:

US: J. B. Harter, Roberto Rincon, Jonathan Webb, Wallace Merritt and Delmas Howe

France: Roland Beaufre and Olivier C.
