The Works of George Platt Lynes

Art too dangerous for its time.

George Platt Lynes, who lived from 1907 - 1955, is considered an important figure in a seminal artistic circle of New York in the 1930's and 40's that encompassed major literary, artistic and performing artists of the day whom he also photographed. These included Gertrude Stein, Paul Cadmus, Martha Graham, and Tennessee Williams among others.

While his accomplishments in fashion, ballet and mythology were prodigious, this exhibition will focus on the subject he was most passionate about, the male figure. Including both portraits and nudes, most elaborately conceived in his studio, the show will explore the forward thinking ideas that would signify his unique style. Using Hollywood lighting techniques, unusual angles or even backlighting, he developed a signature look that still seems refreshingly modern today.

Circulated privately among friends, and never signed out of fear of retribution, it is only in the past 25 years as societal tensions over male eroticism have eased that Lynes’ male nudes have been given their due respect in the art world.

ABSTRACT ART
“The abstract, especially in those rough sketches, is very important to me, perhaps because of my advertising background, where layout is so important. Sometimes those first few lines cut the paper into such satisfying shapes that I don’t want to go on, but I always do, adding nostrils and nipples and bootstraps until I have filled the paper up as usual.” — Tom of Finland
