S&M, (sadomasochism) is a human interaction describing the quite common activities between consenting adults that contain sadistic and masochistic elements.

Behaviors such as erotic spanking, tickling, and love-bites that many people think of only as "rough" sex also contain elements of sadomasochism.

Similarly, the exchange of power in S&M may not be along the expected lines. While it might be assumed that the "sadist," — the person who gives the sensation or causes the humiliation — is the one with the power, the actual power may lie with the "masochist" —who typically creates the script, or at least sets the boundaries, by which the S&M practitioners play.

There is no definitive opinion on this phenomenon, but a vast documentation of writings, relationships, experiences, films and artworks such as: The works of French writer, The Marquis De Sade, (1790?s), Austrian writer, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novel- Venus in Furs, (1870), French writer Pauline Rage's novel Story of O (1954), Italian filmmaker, Pier Paolo Pasolini's- Salo, (1975), New York's Hellfire Club, (1970s), American photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe, (1980s), Madonna's SEX book, (1992), and more recently American photographers Mitchel Evans, (2000s) and Rick Castro's- 13 Years of Bondage, (2003).
