Rare & Raw is the Queer Caucus for Art’s annual exhibition in conjunction with the College Art Association (CAA) conference.

A combination of archival photography, contemporary installation, drawings, ephemera, and video exploring themes of queer history, visibility, and representation. Works by senior artists are paired with younger counterparts to show different ways in which inter-generational artists engage with similar issues.

Connecting Canadian and American artists of different generations, it engages the past to illuminate issues that affect queer lives and queer representations today.

Rare & Raw was made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Queer Caucus for Art, an affiliated society of the College Art Association.

“The artists in the exhibition allude to many complex histories that make up our community and the ways we continue to shape history through resistance and subversive acts.”

“Viewed as a whole, the exhibition helps us imagine and speculate on the many possibilities of gender and sexuality.”

— Ken Moffatt

The exhibition conceptually sequences works based on themes such as power, sexuality, history and the Queer gaze and will represent the Queer Caucus for Art’s annual exhibition held in conjunction with the College Art Association (CAA) conference.

The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is the first state-chartered museum devoted to LGBTQ artists and audiences; the Museum is a unique non-profit arts institution and is the successor to the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, which has been supporting gay and lesbian visual arts for more than twenty years, actively demonstrating that queer art exists not in a vacuum but as an integral part of both contemporary art and art history.

The Museum has a considerable permanent collection of art, including, Andy Warhol, Duncan Grant, Delmas Howe, Jean Cocteau, Deni Ponty, Sonia Melara, Cassandra, Marsden Hartley, Horst, Bastille, Blade, Tom of Finland, Michael Kirwan, and many more.
