Discussion of Japanese Gay Art History
Lead by Richard Hawkins

TOM House

7:00 PM

For manga artists in Japan, many hope to debut in one of the national magna magazines, but Gengoroh Tagame has already had his work published for over 30 years, in multiple languages around the world. Tagame has had an international impact, with the help of the Internet over the last two decades, to become Japan’s most well-known Gay erotic artist. –Gaijin • Tokyo • Undergound by AtomicBoyX.

Richard Hawkins is an American artist whose works are held by the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Hawkins was in correspondence with Tagame back in the mid-’90s, and they exchanged artwork that introduced Gay manga into the Tom of Finland Foundation archive and Tom of Finland artwork into the pages of G-men magazine.

A panel discussion, presentation and Q&A
on erotic art and artists in Japan as written about in Gay Erotic Art in Japan. With Gengoroh Tagame, Richard Hawkins, Anne Ishii and Graham Kolbeins.

MONEY
“…I named what I thought was an enormous sum. Without blinking an eye, he gathered up my life work and handed me the amount I asked for: $70… I didn’t expect more. Remember that homosexuality was forbidden in most of the Western world; so all those businesses were illegal, black market. I knew that they wouldn’t have paid me more anyway — or so I believed then.”
— Tom of Finland
