THE 10TH ANNUAL EROTIC ART WEEKEND
OCTOBER 8, 9 AND 10, 2004

The 10th Annual Tom of Finland Foundation Erotic Art Weekend will take place October 8, 9 and 10, 2004. The weekend begins with an Opening Reception on Friday evening, featuring a newly-curated exhibition of three floors of artworks from the Foundation’s Permanent Collection. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, with the bar sponsored by Smirnoff Twist.

The Erotic Art Fair, for the second year co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Finland in Los Angeles, the City of West Hollywood, and the City’s Lesbian & Gay Advisory Board, is open to the public during the day, both Saturday and Sunday, at Great Hall in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park. The Fair will include an exhibit on the first 20 years of the Foundation, which celebrates its anniversary in November, and will display, for the first time together, the six Tom of Finland images selected by the Judith Rothschild Foundation to be donated in 2006 to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

On Saturday afternoon, at the Fair, Foundation co-creator Durk Dehner will be interviewed by president Dan Berkowitz about Tom of Finland’s importance to gay culture, while on Sunday afternoon, the Fair will host a panel discussion on collecting erotic art; on both afternoons, life drawing demos, with artists and models, will also be featured.

At the Annual Award Banquet on Saturday evening, the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Charles W. Leslie and J. Frederic Lohman, founders of New York’s Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation. The 2004 Cultural Icon Award will be bestowed upon Camille Paglia, University Professor of Humanities and Media Studies at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts. And Miami Beach artist Michael Kirwan will be inducted into the Erotic Artist Hall of Fame. [Please see the separate release on award recipients.]

The Weekend serves as a fund-raising event for the Foundation, and provides a unique opportunity for erotic artists from around the world to display and sell their work to the public. The educational value of the Fairs is enormous: for many, artists and public alike, the Fairs provide the only venue in which erotic art can be displayed, enjoyed, and purchased. The Foundation’s staff curates the Fair, to ensure a variety of styles and media.

The 2004 Erotic Art Fair will host more than 75 artists, from all over the United States, and from several foreign countries. Virtually every medium is represented: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and digital work. The Foundation strives to include work representing all genders and sexual orientations. When the Foundation presented the first Fair in 1995, it was the only event of its kind; the Fair continues to be the largest event in the world dedicated to providing erotic artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work to the public.

When the Foundation presented the first Erotic Art Fair in 1995, it was the only event of its kind. The Los Angeles Fair continues to be the largest event in the world dedicated to providing erotic artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work to the public. In 2001, the Foundation produced the first such Fair in New York, and these East Coast Fairs have now become cultural events as eagerly anticipated as their West Coast counterparts.
