December 4 - 27, 2003 New York, NY

Art @ Large
presents:
"Ohhhh Baby!"
by Carolyn Weltman

Paintings, Drawings & Giclée Prints

Carolyn Weltman makes art that entices our libido, and gets a lot of flack for it, because she sells it on the streets of New York. Her images of "her boys and girls", are readily available as miniature prints and note cards. Her exhibition prints for the gallery are limited edition Giclée versions, with some added nail enamels and additional drawing for a bit of uniqueness.

She draws her models from life, with graphite & gesso, and scans to manipulate on her computer. Then Carolyn makes a rough print and redraws with pen, and repeats this process until she feels the final image has the substance she requires to let it breathe on it's own. This will be the first exhibition where some of her original works will be on view and for sale.

Artist's reception: December 4, 6 - 9 PM.

Icaro Gallery
presents:
"Bordellos and Boudoirs"

by: Liezel Rubin, 2003

by: Margie Darrow-Stretz, 2003

New Photographs by Liezel Rubin
New Paintings by Margie Darrow-Stretz

Long Beach artists Darrow-Stretz and Rubin have collaborated to create a series of works that investigate and explore the lives of the women and men who inhabit the world of bordellos and boudoirs. They were inspired by the French boudoir postcards of the 1920s and 1930s.

Darrow-Stretz combines elements of the vintage “femmes” with contemporary aesthetics in a style reminiscent of art deco and cubism. She works to retain the sensuality of the models while exploring the idea of femininity and women’s role in society.

Rubin has created a striking series of black and white photographs that illustrate many aspects of the world’s oldest profession. She looks at the relationships between seller and buyer, religion and commerce, truth and illusion, and romance and sex.

Nebojsa Zdravkovic

On-line exhibition starts November 3
Images and prices are posted.

Preview: November 4, 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

Warwick Beecham‘s subject matter covers a wide range - landscapes, seascapes, still life, and especially figure work, as showcased in this one-man exhibition at Adonis Art of London. These paintings present the male form relaxing on and around Sydney’s famous beaches, a reflection of the hedonistic lifestyle in Australia’s sunny climate.

Inspired by his childhood at the seaside town of Torquay, Victoria, this collection draws on his early observations of the moods of sea, surf and beach culture.

November 6 - 29, 2003 New York, NY

Art @ Large
presents:
"Below Us Is The Sky"
photo constructions by:
David Hochbaum

David Hochbaum's art is the construction of paintings built on photographs and images that are not only the contemplation of human behavior, but also a reaction to history, astronomy, sex, and iconoclastic symbols. Each picture produces a vision from his private world bound to elements and symbols. An exposition of women and men caged in a world constructed by natural elements and surrounded by foreign symbols. The figures in his work seek a balance between the static and kinetic forces of a very surreal and psychosexual environment in which they dwell.

Built from a melange of wood, metal and paper, both photographic and printed matter, the work is painted with oil, acrylics, varnishes, pencils and inks. These images are layered physically as well as historically, combining the figurative approach of the 19th century photographer with the medieval alchemist projected through the eyes of a 21st century cubist.

A
Celebration of Life
for
John Darcy Noble
(The Sultan)
March 21, 1923 -- September 21, 2003

Photo by Jeff Compasso      Photo by Jeff Compasso

John Darcy Noble

The Sultan, 1985

Robert Clement and the Tom of Finland Foundation invite all who have had the good fortune to have met or known the late John Darcy Noble -- also known as THE SULTAN -- for an afternoon Celebration of his life at the Foundation Headquarters. The Celebration Service will be followed by a luncheon and much toasting in his honor.

Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 2:30 PM.
RSVP required at 213.250.1685 or Administration@TomOfFinlandFoundation.org

The Sultan

Some are erotic. Others exotic.

The Sultan was both.

A friend of Quentin Crisp. A friend of everyone who met him.

From the gas lights of Old London Town
to the garish lights of Hollywood
-- wherever he was when he touched a life --
it changed.

When his foot ailed him
his wheel chair became a Sudan chair
as he was lofted up onto the Foundation's front porch by hirsute hunks.

He knew how to live.

And live he did.

The turbaned paramour of fantasy.

The Sultan truly did embody the light of life and freely shared it with everyone around him. We thank him for all he gave.

An introduction given by SHARP at the 2003 L.A. Erotic Art Weekend Awards Banquet
where the Sultan was presented a very special Foundation Award posthumously.

Visual AIDS
presents:
Postcards From The Edge
A Benefit

Postcards From the Edge is a show and sale of original, postcard-sized artworks on paper by established and emerging artists. Last year, over 1,000 postcards were submitted!

All artworks will be priced at $50 and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited so that the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While the buyers have a list of participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until it is purchased and the signature is revealed. A collector might end up with a work by a famous artist or by someone they don't yet know.

Either way, they walk away with a great piece of art while supporting Visual AIDS's important work.

One day only, 3:00 - 6:00 PM

Artists wishing to participate in this event must submit their artwork
by November 1, 2003. See their website for details.

UPDATE: Artist Marc DeBauch has announced that
he has submitted a piece for this benefit.

Visual AIDS
presents:
"Stirrings"

A Web Gallery
Curated by Durk Dehner and Sharp

"Punchinello's Night Out," 1995-98
Patrick Webb

"What makes a piece of art erotic?" Well, when viewing a work you can feel something in your heart. Or experience something in your head. Or you can sense something down there. It isn't as simple (or pornographic) as just "wanting" the subject. You may feel desire or you may feel the desire from, or within, the subjects.

The pieces we selected are about appeal. And want. But they are not wanton. They may invoke a carnal desire. They are attractive. We are attracted to some area of sexuality through what they make us feel. They may be stirring. Or somehow suggestive. Or they may just remind us that man is a sexual animal.

Adonis Art
presents paintings by:
Warwick Beecham
"New Paintings from Down Under"

In 1993 Warwick Beecham (born 1947, Melbourne, Australia) realized a lifelong ambition and switched from an executive accounting career at Warner Roadshow Movie World Studios to full time painting. Warwick's subjects cover a wide range: landscapes, seascapes, still life - but especially figure work, as showcased in this one-man exhibition at Adonis Art of London.

"I interpret the beauty of the male figure in oil paint, because for me it is the most striking medium. It also enhances my brushwork, which tends to be strong and thick, and then complements my choice of colors. Previously, both the color and tone of my work was more realistic, but for this exhibition I’m now working with a warmer palette. This has permitted a freer interpretation of the subject matter, especially in the paintings of torsos and genitals, which are faceless and without personality."

"Mel Roberts: Unbound"
It's all about sex

Photograph by Mel Roberts

I always thought sex was underrated” -- Mel Roberts

Mel Roberts previously published images -- "California Boys: Photographs from the 1960s and 1970s" and "The Wild Ones: The Erotic Photography of Mel Roberts" -- hinted that the youth in his photographs were not quite as innocent as Roberts's crafty lens and saturated colors portrayed them.
With the cooperation of his friend and colleague Rick Castro, physique photographer Roberts has chosen to step outside of what might be expected of him next, and bring to the public eye an exhibition of images in a genre never before seen.

TOM OF FINLAND FOUNDATION
L.A. EROTIC ART WEEKEND
AND FAIR

The Tom of Finland Foundation presents this weekend dedicated to exposing the public to erotic art in all its diversity: international cultures, male, female, transgender and the complete range of alternatives in sexual orientation and expression.

The 9th Annual Tom of Finland Foundation Erotic Art Weekend will take place October 10, 11, and 12, 2003.  The Weekend begins with an Opening Reception on Friday evening.  The Erotic Art Fair is open to the public during the day, both Saturday and Sunday;  life drawing demos, with artists and models, are held both afternoons. Saturday evening's occasion is the Foundation's annual Awards Banquet.  And on Saturday and Sunday, there is, in addition to the Fair, a symposium and panel discussion on a topic related to erotic art.

In addition, this year's Weekend will feature an exhibit on the life of Touko Laaksonen, aka erotic artist Tom of Finland, with particular emphasis on his childhood and early adult life in his native Finland.  This exhibit was officially dedicated at the Opening of the 2003 New York Erotic Art Fair by Jari Sinkari, the Deputy Consul General of Finland.

The Weekend serves as a fund-raising event for the Foundation, and provides a unique opportunity for erotic artists from around the world to display and sell their work to the public. The educational value of the Fairs is enormous: for many, artists and public alike, the Fairs provide the only venue in which this work can be displayed, enjoyed, and purchased. The Foundation's staff curates the Fair, to ensure a variety of styles and media.

The Erotic Art Fair generally plays host to 60 artists, from all over the United States, and from several foreign countries. Virtually every medium is represented: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and digital work. The Foundation strives to include work representing all genders and sexual orientations.

When the Foundation presented its first Erotic Art Fair in 1995, it was the first event of its kind.  The Los Angeles Fair continues to be the largest event in the world dedicated to providing erotic artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work to the public.

Rick Castro
presents:
Furotica
It Ain't Exactly Bambi

Rick Castro, director of the cult classic Hustler White
and the new MTV documentary Plushies & Furries
presents photographs and videos that document
the underground "furry" lifestyle he experienced during
the filming and production of Plushies & Furries.

What are Furries? They are people who identify with anthropomorphized animals, (animals with human characteristics) in some cases they feel that they are, in fact, part animal. Since the early 1980s, a growing number of people from every walk of life and every part of the world have been introduced to the Furry lifestyle in large part via the Internet and now consider themselves "Furry."

Furry is not so much a hobby or trend, but rather an identity. Consider this, is being gay only about gay sex? Is it a lifestyle, or does it consist of the complete identity of an individual? The same questions apply here.

Furry could be the beginning of a whole new social identity: "transspecies."

Friday September 19, 8:00 PM.
Screening the video Plushies and Furries and
slide show with questions and answers period with Rick Castro.

September 4 - 27, 2003 New York, NY

Art @ Large
and
Les Barany
present:
Annie Sprinkle
Photographs

The first U.S. solo exhibition of photographic works by the legendary
Annie Sprinkle, PhD, (the first porn star to get a PhD!).

"I love the honesty of Annie's work. The unapologetic documentation of the sex industry, stemming from her unique insider status, is fascinating. From candid shots on porn film sets to images of pimps on the streets of NYC, to her newer portrait series of Polaroid Transfers, Annie's camera slips quietly into a behind the scenes world very few photographers can access or understand. Her photography has been long under appreciated."

--Rebecca Ames, Curator, Museum of Sex, New York City

This year marks the 30th year that Annie Sprinkle has been exploring sexuality in all of it’s most glorious (and inglorious) forms. From her beginnings as an evolving, sexually curious starlet in pornographic films to her growth as a groundbreaking performance artist, she has shared what she has learned through film making, writing, photography, artwork, teaching workshops, and performing.

Her fine art photography has been shown in galleries internationally, and this will be the first solo exhibition of her photographs in the U.S. with special thanks to curator, Les Barany.

"Back to the Closets"

Images from Beau Travail

For the first time the festival will be split between Lisbon and Oporto

As we have almost all the films from the last 6 festivals, the installation will consist of 14 thematic closets (i.e. Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, HIV etc.) with the relevant films being screened inside. Each "closet" will be planned and decorated by an artist selected by associations, cultural institutions and art galleries and on the opening night 14 films will be shown at the same time. After that only one film-closet will be shown per session.

Admission will be free for this retrospective.

Carlos Batts
presents:

Crazy Sexy Hollywood

In conjunction with the release of his book of the same name,
photographer Carlos Batts brings together
six of Los Angeles' finest contemporary photographers
in a collection curated by Carlos himself.
A total of fifty works pay tribute to the looks, attitudes, glamour
and grittiness that make Hollywood what it is.

This exhibit will tour the United States. See website for details.

Carlos Batts' captivating, often erotic, and sometimes mysterious works have appeared in magazines including Vibe, Maxim and Hustler.

In addition to his black and white photographs of men in bondage, Rick Castro is known for having directed the cult classic film Hustler White.

Renowned for his striking color and black and white images of women in fetish attire, Steve Diet Goedde's photographs have graced the covers of numerous magazines.

Patrick Hoelck's intense and revealing portraits have been exposed on the pages of magazines including Rolling Stone, Flaunt and Blender. He has directed numerous music videos and shot CD covers for a diverse group of bands.

Dave Naz's erotic images of women in various states of dress have been brought to the public's attention in numerous magazines and art exhibits around the world.

Estevan Oriol's career as a photographer started when he began recording his outrageous experiences on the road as House of Pain's tour manager. He soon became one of the most sought after photographers in the hip-hop community.

Barbara Nitke

S&M Relationships in Photographs

Kiss of Fire is a rare view of the romantic side of sadomasochism.

The book explores the intimacy, trust and great joy found in SM relationships through photographs. Each photograph is about something new the nature of erotic impulse, sexual desire, and humanity. The extreme sexuality inspires Nitke to collaborate with the lovers who allow her into their intimate lives.

The result is an exploration of sadomasochism, fetishes, and cross-dressing as life-enhancing, erotic experiences.

August 7 - 22, 2003 New York, NY

Art @ Large
Presents An
Erotic Juried Exhibition

36 Artists from the USA and beyond

Winners of the Neo-Erotic Juried Show to be announced in mid-June 2003.
Best in Show gets solo exhibition in 2004.

Juror: Grady T. Turner, art critic, author, and curator of the inaugural exhibition
of the Museum of Sex, New York City.

"This a dichotomous moment for artists interested in sex and sexuality," says Mr. Turner. "On the one hand, commercial galleries and art magazines are filled with art addressing intimacy, love, and the body, some of it rather explicit. On the other, the category of 'erotic art' is regarded as something of an art world ghetto, cut apart from the mainstream and thus largely denied access to its infrastructure of galleries, magazines, art fairs and so on.

"In jurying this show, I was impressed by the quality and diversity of art submitted by artists who would classify their work as erotic. In the very painful process of making final selections from over 300 submissions, I decided to select a group that reflected the variety of those submissions. So it is that the final result is a mix of media and sexual styles, but also of fine artists and commercial artists, professionals and amateurs, teachers and students."

The winner is to be announced at the opening reception
for the artists and Mr. Turner, which will be held on
Thursday, August 7, 2003, 6 - 9:00 PM.

Art @ Large
presents:
Fred Hatt
"Lifeforce"
an exhibition of drawings

Fred Hatt's love and skill for drawing the human figure is equal to his passion for body art performance. His work as a performance artist takes him on travels worldwide where he engages in everything from ritualistic work based on Japanese Butoh to body-painting live nude models.

Most notably, his body-painting performance video was featured in Body Art: Marks of Identity, November 1999 - May 2000 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

“Drawing is a kind of dancing, all there in the moment, in the body. The artist's eyes dance on the beams of light that move on the surfaces of the model. Underneath, tremors and shiftings of muscles, movement of breath, flowing of vessels and nerves call the eye here and there, moving. In these visions the mind traces line, form, light and color, partnering the dance.”

Adonis Art
presents:
"Bound by the Womb"
by
Michele Martinoli

This is the first-ever exhibition by a woman photographer held at the gallery.  "Bound by the Womb" captures the unconventional beauty and subtle sexuality of Michele¹s raw male subjects in a startling black and white, and color, portfolio.  Martinoli¹s candid female gaze underscores the classical beauty of the male body -- amplifying not just the sexual power, but also the emotional charge of her sitters.

Martinoli¹s models are of her own creation - indeed one is her son (Zenaide), and the others are her extended family. This close association is significant in the analysis of her work.

May 14 - June 28, 2003 New York City, NY

The Robert Miller Gallery
presents:
Pierre et Gilles

Pierre et Gilles are a pair of fabulous French artists who's works have become the definition of kitsch. As a result, they have become icons themselves. Often considered photographers, this isn't precisely true. A piece by Pierre et Gilles combines photographs with painting and collage. Their portraits turn celebrities into icons, blending classical ideals, religious images, and eroticism.

While Pierre et Gilles play irreverently with our perceptions of religion and pop culture, juxtaposing the secular and non-secular, the saint and the sinner, the divine and the depraved,  they are seen more as iconographers of the modern age then iconoclasts. They play with stereotypes of religion, sexuality and culture and draw from numerous genres for their inspiration. Their works are a celebration rather than an enlightenment.

The Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation
presents:
"The Kiss"
gay and lesbian photo biennial
56 artists represented by 108 photographs

The language of love, friendship, hate and all the subtle expressions
between two people can be expressed in the kiss —
eyes open, eyes closed, bodies touching, bodies apart, subtlety or
with graphic and cruel violence, acceptance or rejection.
Love, lust, hate, envy, comedy, tragedy are but a few of the ways
in which our expressions are conveyed through the kiss.

Those moments are often fleeting,
but with a camera the lifetime of a moment can last forever.

“NYC SEX”
THE INAUGURAL EXHIBITION OF THE MUSEUM OF SEX

Delving into the histories of prostitution, burlesque, birth control, obscenity, fetish and more, the inaugural exhibition of The Museum of Sex, "NYC Sex" includes never-before exhibited selections from public and private collections, including materials once confiscated and classified as obscene. These primary sources of social history -- letters, photographs, films and newspapers -- reveal how it has been possible in New York, more than in any other American city, to form communities around Sex and Sexuality.

This exhibition runs through July 3, 2002.

The Violent Art Show

While the theme of this show is not specifically erotic, it does feature for sale one of the world’s most famous erotic works.   The Dutch sculptor Herman Makkink acquired world-wide fame when director Stanley Kubrick used several of his works in the classic film “A Clockwork Orange.” Probably the most memorable of these is “The Rocking Machine,” a fiber glass sculpture of a penis with a beautifully-shaped female rear, which was used in the movie by Alex (Malcom MacDowell) to commit a crime.

Instigated by the graphic design trio Drencrom, Makkink has now resurrected his kinetic sculpture, which is available for the first time since 1969 in a limited edition of six. Wild Seduction Gallery is proud to exhibit this important sculpture, hand-cast in fiber glass from the original mould, numbered and signed by the artist.

The exhibition also includes four more different and powerful artists: Charles Krafft, Robert Preston, Adán Hernández, and William Cordoba.  For complete biographies and interviews with the artists, visit http://wildseduction.comWild Seduction Gallery: 2762 NW 22nd St., Miami, Florida. 305-633-8951.

Share Your Vision
Art Contest 2003
for HIV+ artists

ShareYour Vision is a national art contest and exhibition, sponsored by Visual AIDS with funding from Roche. The Share Your Vision program was created to help raise awareness of the impact of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis on the lives of people with HIV. CMV retinitis is an AIDS-related opportunistic infection, which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. The contest is open to HIV-positive artists who have been affected by or touched by CMV retinitis. The most appropriate submissions will address, discuss or represent the artist’s understanding of and/or experience with CMV retinitis. Selected works will be displayed in an exhibition at Artists Space in New York and included in an accompanying exhibition catalogue. Winning artists and a guest will be invited to attend the opening reception on Wednesday, October 22, 2003. Prizes will be awarded to winning artists, with a matching gift to an HIV/AIDS charitable 501(c)(3) research or support organization of the winner’s choice.
