Adonis Art
presents paintings by:
Myles Antony
"Latest Paintings"

Dream Team by Myles
Antony
On-Line Gallery Available
For many years Myles Antony was one of London's foremost
gay artists holding highly successful annual exhibitions at Adonis
Art. Three years ago he spread his wings and flew home to live in
his native city Dublin.
Myles Antony is unusual in that he paints entirely in watercolour,
always working with live models.
His pictures are portraits of real people, many of them young
men he has encountered on the streets of London and Dublin.
It is often been suggested that his lushly romantic portraits
must be unreal because the models are "too beautiful";
but Myles insists that the young men he paints are not nearly
as beautiful as many of those he passes in the street every
day.
In 1991 Myles Antony’s work was exhibited
at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. His work can be
found in collections all over the world. |

"Rick Herold: Nudes"
A 30-Year Retrospective
Exhibition
|
Love Mandala, 2003
by Rick Herold
|
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 23, 2004, 2
- 5 PM, Free admission.
| In 1965, Herold exhibited his first major
show at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in Los Angeles. PBS focused
their documentary, Metallic Venus, around this exhibit and
Herold’s career catapulted into a new arena.
Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, Herold focused primarily
on the male nude and later shifted his focus to tantric
symbolism. Eventually, he revisited the sensual male nude,
which he continues to explore today. Though his subjects
have changed courses, two things have always remained
consistent: his exploration of sexuality and the body
as a spiritual temple—or, as he calls it, “sacred sexuality”—and
the distinct technique of reverse painting on plexi-glass
and clear vinyl. |

Flazh!Alley Studio
presents:
"Men in Tutus"
Photography by Miriam L. Preissel

"Chris" By Miriam L. Preissel
General Public Viewing on December 2, 2004, 7 - 10
PM
as part of San Pedro's 1st Thursday Artwalk.
Adults only, please.
Flazh!Alley Studio is proud to announce its much
anticipated launch with the presentation of Los Angeles art
photographer Miriam L. Preissel’s stunning series, “Men in Tutus.”
A dazzling series of men from all walks of life, surrender themselves
to the experience, challenging their identity through appearance
and action, becoming the prima ballerina for at least just one
wonderful freeze framed moment. “Men in Tutus” also demonstrates
the power of an artist joyfully challenging the changing the
face of masculinity in the 21st Century. A
wildly creative and colorful photographer, Preissel serves up
a visual feast of grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers and
uncles playfully questioning society’s views on masculine derring-do.
Preissel worked with a professional ballet instructor, makeup
artist, and costumer, photographed nineteen unlikely men invited
to appear in tutus on a dramatically lit stage. The subjects
– including an R.O.T.C. Instructor, retired Navy Commander,
and a tattoo artist – present sharp contrasts between contemporary
masculinity and the archetype of ballet. |

Visual AIDS
presents:
Postcards From The Edge
A Benefit
| Postcards From the Edge is a show and
sale of original, postcard-sized artworks on paper by established
and emerging artists. Last year, over 1,200 postcards were submitted!
All artworks will be priced at $50 and sold on a first-come,
first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited
so that the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While the
buyers have a list of participating artists, they don't know
who created which piece until it is purchased and the signature
is revealed. A collector might end up with a work by a famous
artist or by someone they don't yet know.
Either way, they walk away with a great piece of art while
supporting Visual AIDS's important work.
No work will be for sale on the Preview Night,
however one lucky raffle winner will be able to select any
artwork that evening before anyone else! There will also be
a silent auction of small works by Bern Boyle (1951-1992),
Brian Weil (1954-1996), and Jimmy de Sana (1950-1999) from
the collection of Sur Rodney (Sur). — $50 cover, additional
raffle tickets $20, open bar, participating artists can attend
free.

Adonis Art
presents:
"Men Exposed"
Photography by Peter Arnold
An on-line gallery is available.
| "In this exhibition -
MEN EXPOSED - Peter Arnold exhibits a powerful exploration
of the male nude. Photographed in black and white, this
extraordinary collection of images displays a unique sense
of style and harmony.
"The hallmark of Peter's
vision is his dedication to perfection. The models were
carefully selected for their honed bodies, each bursting
with sexual tension and vitality. Masterly moulded by light
to enhance the flesh tones and textures, the models were
arranged, contorted and composed for the shoot. Every muscle
was lit in clear relief, the shots refined to the smallest
detail, leaving nothing to chance. The result - modern man
has been seductively transformed into glowing sculptures
reminiscent of the form and performance of the ancient Gods." |

Art @ Large
presents:
"Illuminata: Are
You Curious?"
Images by Barbara Nitke
An on-line gallery is available.
| Illuminata: Are you curious?
focuses on the concept of abandon, continuing Barbara Nitke's
exploration of the alternative sexual world. "The work
is about losing oneself into a place beyond control,"
she says, "giving over to something which is fierce,
raw and primitive, in search of a transcendent state."
Acknowledged by critic A. D. Coleman as
one of the most important photographers currently exploring
human sexuality, Nitke's work of the last two decades also
furthers the debate over what is a fit subject for high
art.
As publicly funded organizations continue the trend of retreating
from controversial subjects, mainstream public acceptance
has risen. In a recent issue of Time Magazine, John Cloud
observed that "our astonishment at Robert Mapplethorpe's
photographs of leather and pain 20 years ago now seems quaint..."
She is also a co-plaintiff with the National
Coalition for Sexual Freedom in challenging John Ashcroft,
Attorney General of the United States of America, and the
federal Communications Decency Act (CDA) which regulates
obscenity on the Internet. The case is expected to go to
the U. S. Supreme Court. |

Western Project
presents:
Tom Sanford
Photographs & New Paintings
Western Project is proud to present the first
west coast exhibition by New York artist Tom Sanford. The show
is comprised of two recent paintings, and photographs of the
artist as Tupac Shakur, from Sanford 's project, Thug4Life ,
an investigation of fandom, celebrity, idolatry and art.
In his paintings Sanford uses a Renaissance style, remixed and
shaken -- replacing traditional religious iconography with Tupac
Shakur and other gansta rap artists to create a kind of neo
musical/religious narrative. The rise and fall of Shakur is
depicted in a Christ framework, grounded in history and retold
as myth. The paintings are colorful Pop sensations, direct and
assertive, mirroring the operatic life of Shakur. |

Western Project
presents:
Carole Caroompas
Psychedelic Jungle: New Paintings
| Western Project is proud to present the first
exhibition of paintings by Carole Caroompas in four years. Meshing
images from Tennessee William's, Night of the Iguana
and the 1960s psychedelic rock and roll era, the artist has
created eight works examining themes of freedom and the search
for home. Using a kaleidoscopic play of tropical and counterculture
icons, the paintings pose the notion of ‘ Eden ', but are countered
with darker film noir images.
Caroompas weaves a 1960s optimism with her version of vanitas
and nature morte imagery, making notions of art and culture,
literature and cinema collapse in a river of free floating
association. Each work is a journey behind the veil of order;
and each a lush and exuberant trip of possibilities. |

"Smokin' Babes"
Works by Brian Viveros
Opening reception: Thursday, October 14, 2004,
6 - 9 PM.
"Wicked art," is how writer/filmmaker Clive
Barker described Viveros' work.
Born and raised in California, Brian Viveros began drawing
at the early age of four and at age eleven started a long
obsession . With no formal training, he began to draw and
learn from the masters in comics, fine art, films and fantasy
art. The turning point in Brian's career came in 1997 with
his participation in "Deep Inside The Art Of Porn" exhibition
in Lausanne, Switzerland at The Musee d'art Contemporain
Pornographique, curated by Les Barany, (H. R. Giger's agent),
who introduced Brian's work to a wide international audience.
Since then, Brian's work has been in numerous gallery shows
and exhibitions. Work has appeared in Secret Magazine, In
the Flesh, Skin Two, Drawing Blood, Darks Art Magazine,
and Art Alternatives. His comic book works includes Vesil
I, II, III, Hardcore, Snuff, Psycho Hunter and the short
story, The Magdalena in Fetish Magazine.
Currently he employs the use of airbrush, and charcoal in
his paintings on paper. Known mostly for his smoking women
and surrealist approach to the female form, Viveros' tattoo'd
women robots are prominently featured at this years annual
Woodstock Tattoo Festival, along with notables, H.R. Giger,
John John Jesse, David Hochbaum, Joe Coleman, Frank Kozik,
et al. |

"Intimately Acquainted"
A Web Gallery
Curated by Grady T. Turner

Image: Sam Orwen, Lovers, 1982
Featuring the work of Archive members; Vincent Cianni,
Joe De Hoyos, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Keith Haring, Jerry Hooten,
Derek Jackson, Jonathan Leiter, Eduardo Mirales, Michael Mitchell,
John Morrison, Mark Morrisroe, Luna Luis Ortiz, Sam Orwen, Hugh
Steers, Steed Taylor, Gregory Veney, Jorge Veras, David Wojnarowicz
and Martin Wong.
In the Curator’s Statement, Grady T. Turner states:
"There are any number of ways for a curator to approach an archive
so large as that maintained by Visual AIDS. Someone with a fixed
idea in mind can very likely find a good selection of art to
fit the bill. If you want art directly addressing issues surrounding
AIDS—protest, health care, identity, illness—you can find it
in the archive. You want homoeroticism? Got you covered. Realist
painting? Abstraction? Conceptual art? No problem. Famous names?
There are plenty. But what if you approach the archive with
no predetermined theme or concept? I saw curating this online
exhibition as an opportunity to get intimately acquainted with
the Visual AIDS archive, and so I elected to go about this in
the most labor-intensive way: to simply look at each and every
image and see what jumped out at me..." Grady
T. Turner is an art critic and curator based in New York. His
exhibitions include "Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography
in America," "Flophouse: Life on the Bowery," and "NYC Sex:
How New York City Transformed Sex in America." His criticism
appears regularly in publications including Art in America,
Flash Art, Artnews, New York Times and Bomb, where he is a contributing
editor. |

The
Museum of Sex
presents:
"Getting Off --
Exploring the Pleasure Principle"

Michael Schmelling & Matthew Salacuse
courtesy of Wallspace Gallery, NYC
A groundbreaking contemporary exhibit that takes
an uplifting, humorous look at the age-old art of sexual stimulation.
| Inspired by discreetly private
acts that occur away from public audiences, "Get Off!" features
the work of established and emerging artists who investigate
sexual titillation as a means to examine their relationship
to pleasure. Exploring a range of sexual pleasure themes
from masturbation and partnering to voyeurism and fantasy,
each artist creates a distinctive site specific installation
in media ranging from printmaking to sculpture, photography,
furniture design and video. Participating artists are Greg
Curry, Jane Dickson, Lisa Dilillo, eteam, Terence Koh, Joseph
Maida, Laurel Nakadate & Dora Malech, Tom Otterness,
Txuspo Poyo, Mabi Revuelta, Karim Rashid, and Michael Schmelling
& Matthew Salacuse.
"A positive perspective toward sexual pleasure is a vital
and political attitude that makes for an integrated and
whole person," says Robin Kahn, a contemporary artist whose
work examines issues surrounding gender conditioning and
sexual identity, and who organized the exhibit as guest
curator. "Seldom do artists have an opportunity to exhibit
their sexually-themed work without censorship. I’m thrilled
that the Museum of Sex in New York, an institution that
champions sexual freedom, has provided this remarkable group
of artists such an ideal space." |

"Punk Électrique"
Works by Punk Rocker John
John Jesse

Sid's Kids
(2004) by John John Jesse
Opening reception: Thursday, September 9, 2004,
6 - 9 PM.
John John gives us the anarchy of youth.
A portrayal of class war struggle, street anarchism, and
his past teenage destructive punk rock lifestyle. A heroic
fight from the gutter of the streets of the '80s Lower East
Side, to the triumph of post-addicted street youth.
His ever present attention to detail has certainly become
his signature style. The paintings are framed in various
woods and metals, both vintage and elaborate moldings sometimes
refinished by John John. The models delineation, facial
expressions, their clothing and toys, all reflect the artist's
pronounced attitude of familiar experiences. Vivid color,
built up in translucent layers of colored pencil, gouache,
embellished with gold leaf enamel, erupts alongside finely
rendered ink drawing and mists of paint.
He does this with obsessive detail and flair for originality
-- to show us that the only hope beyond the tragedy of life,
is the fact that he has survived it with his art. |

present:
"Civil Disobedience"
A Web Gallery
Curated by Photios Giovanis

Image: Stephen Varble, Blind Man Walking, 1972
In the Curator’s Statement, Giovanis states: "As
a form of protest, civil disobedience defines a varied set of
techniques involving non-violent action to demand change in
policy at the highest levels of power. With the Republican National
Convention poised to stream into the living rooms of millions
of Americans, the voice of dissent will also fire up. For AIDS
activism, the act of protesting has doubled as a site of public
mourning and commemoration. Collective action is transformative
of self, affective and emotional. The Pride March taking place
internationally, demonstrate how an act of resistance can, over
time, transform into a collective act of celebration...." |

Highways Performance

presents:
"GWM, 10x8, Uncut"
Curated by Philip Hitchcock
& Mary Milelzcik
Thursday, August 5th, 7 PM
The opening night soiree will feature an appetizer buffet and no
host cocktails. Also featured are select lounge acts and unsolicited
dating advice from our panel of experts. $20 donation.
This exhibit takes a look at the gay personal
ad scene. Ten photographers showcase 8 x 10 photos that are
inspired by personal ads. Although this exhibit appears on
the surface to pander to prurient interests, the exhibit is
an historical “time stamp” on contemporary gay culture and
a relevant social commentary on gay mating rituals in the
third millennium. “It would be a glaring omission
of any historian looking back on queer social morays at the
eve of the 3rd millennium and not mention personal ad dating,”
says show curator and artist Philip Hitchcock. “It is ironic
that as a community we are fighting for the right to marry
while still struggling to find the time and proper avenues
to even meet the right person.” “Anyone who has ever
been on a personal ad web site totally gets the vibe of this
exhibit. It is an exploration of how we as gay men attempt
to market ourselves to each other and which assets we choose
to make our calling cards.”
The exhibit features the work of ten photographers including:
Rick Castro, Jeff Compasso, Greg Day, Therelee Fair, Lorenzo
Gomez, Philip Hitchcock, Jay Jorgensen, Jerry Rosen, Henning
Von Berg, and L. Patrick Vigil. |

Photographs of Brent McTavish
An on-line gallery is also available.
| An exhibition of photographs by Brent McTavish,
Canadian photographer. With the advent of photomontage,
Brent has combed through his archive for his best male black
and white images, and then processed them digitally with
shadow images of the rose. Hence the title of the exhibition
-- roMANse -- a conflation of rose, man, and romance.

Western Project
presents:
"Bob Mizer"
The First Exhibition: Selected
Works from 1945 - 1969

John Haley, circa 1950’s.
Opening Reception: Saturday July 31 from 5 - 9 PM.
Saturday, August 14th at 8 PM
A very special audio / visual presentation hosted by
John Sonsini on Bob Mizer and the AMG Studio.
| Western Project is presenting
the first solo exhibition by Bob Mizer. Perhaps the most influential
twentieth century photographer of the male physique, Mizer is
also the most under-recognized. His photography was a seedbed
for a myriad of image makers, both amateur and professional
- such as Robert Mapplethorpe, David Hockney, Jim French, Bruce
Weber and Andy Warhol. Mizer also produced the widely circulated
men's magazine, Physique Pictorial, which introduced and promoted
the artists, George Quaintance and Tom of Finland to the world
at large.
With a knowledge of art history and film, Mizer's work was meticulous,
intelligent, humorous, and eloquent. With out a doubt, Mizer
must now truly be counted as a father of the sexual revolution.
It is not ironic that the male eroticism in today's Abercrombie
and Fitch advertisements, was born in the 1940's in his garage
in Los Angeles. Western Project will be exhibiting a selected
group of photographs from the first half of Mizer's career,
along with props, costumes, collages and set pieces from the
artist's Athletic Model Guild studio. |

"MEN AT ARMS"
A group exhibition
 |
| Artwork: Palanca, 2004 |
Opening Reception: June 10,
18:00 - 21:00 (6 - 9 PM)
| Acts between
men can be cruel and brutal. War, as a vantage point, may
give those acts nobleness. Lust realized in the trenches
doesn't have to be fleeting and desperate -- "tomorrow may
never come". Something lasting and strong and heroic can
come home with soldiers who have bonded on many levels.
Soldiers UNITE! MEN AT ARMS shows us all sides of
the modern warrior. The handsome man in uniform - the dashing
prototype of a fighting machine - an idealized grunt. We
see the meanness, the romantic, the powerful and the desirable.
Etienne, Kim Hanson, The

Axel
and Mr. B
present:
"Axel in Amsterdam"
Axel Offers His Fetish
Line-up
Reception: Saturday, April 5, 2004 from 5 - 8:30
PM
Featuring live fetish performances! Michael Thorn,
Editor of Instigator Magazine and Axel will be joining the staff
at Mister B for an explosive evening. Come join them and get tied
up, locked up, plastic-wrapped, electro-sexed, (branded?) or just
enjoy the art.
| Axel in Amsterdam is a 5
month long celebration of fetish. This is a long run exhibition
of Axel's fetish work from original digital painting canvas,
pen and ink, graphite and photography, on display in Amsterdam
throughout the entire summer. (Prints will be available.)
The erotic artist Axel began drawing homoerotic
imagery at the early age of 15 in a country corner of Idaho.
Years later, after traveling across Europe in 1999, Axel
began drawing erotic images of hyper- masculine men in cartooned
form and was soon working for magazines across the world.
Pencil, Pen and Ink and the heavy color of digital painting
combine to make Axel’s work as diverse as the man himself.
From the wildly popular web-comic Circuit-Boy to
the dark fetish work in Instigator, Axel "can do"
erotica. |

"Making the Private Public"
A Web Gallery
Curated by Brian Clamp
"Belly Button" 1999
Philip Calkin
In the Curator’s Statement, Clamp states: "[this]
exhibition is highly personal, largely bound by a common mood
often saturated with sober reverie and quietude related to a
variety of my own losses. While spikes of irony and humor punctuate
the exhibition, this selection of artworks is less political
and overtly angry than introspective and occasionally elegiac….
While it is often assumed that the agency of anger and protest
logically outstrip unproductive sadness and passive retrospection,
as the diverse artworks in the Archive Project attest, the epidemic
generates a mosaic of emotional responses, none less valid,
necessary, or conventionally constructive than any other…." |

| On Super Bowl Sunday, the
scandalous happening with Mr. Justin Timberlake & Miss
Janet Jackson "shocked" the American public. The Senate
in Washington felt that they had to discuss that mega-mega-important
subject (female breasts on T.V.) to "protect" the 280 million
innocent citizens in the United States… and 450 million
inhabitants of Old Europe smiled about the cowboy president's
Christian government in the New World.
The German cultural organization Goethe Institut Inter Nationes
decided to create an exhibition in America with Henning
von Berg's famous-infamous nude photographs to show the
so called “Land Of The Free” how relaxed the modern democracy
Germany is dealing with public nudity (even frontal male
nudity). |

"Hidden Histories"
Curated by Michael Petry

Tom of Finland
The 20th century is a unique period
in the history of gay subculture as it has transitioned from outlaw
status to an acknowledged (if not always fully accepted) part of
society. Only at the end of a century of great change and new found
openness amongst artists can we perceive the full extent of the
contribution of artists who were same sex lovers, and the ways in
which their sexual identity has affected both their art and the
responses to it.

| Deiter's Body
Project project on aging gracefully continues. It's encouragement
for men of any age to train their body.
At the age of 50, after having
worked many years in the field of basic research and philosophy,
Dieter, a doctor, philosopher, writer and sportsman, discovered
that the male body has been neglected in western societies
by fundamentalistic religious systems for centuries.
Dieter decided to work out on his own. His goal was to demonstrate
that male body can be developed at any age and that a trained
male body can be the source of health, wealth, emotional
balance, fitness and power.
Dieter documents this process not only in text but in images.
Over a 5 year period, he invited over 20 of the worlds top
male photographers to photograph his progress. Each month
we will show a selection of photos from each photographer,
to inspire you to stay fit and healthy. |

"Secret Sex"
Unknown Erotic Drawings of
Bob Ziering
Opening Reception: May 18, 6 – 9
PM
| Long a fabled name among his
fellow artist-illustrators, Bob Ziering is recognized for
his peerless ability to express exuberant motion in line
and color. If you've read a magazine any time during the
past several decades you've probably seen his work... but
never like this. Secret Sex reveals the richness of Bob
Ziering's never-before exhibited erotic work -- both drawings
and paintings. Spanning a period of some 35 years, his works
commingle time and spirit with sex and lust to project magically
mysterious images of ecstatically transcendent erotic love. |

Art
@ Large
presents:
"The Power of Women"
Featuring the Works of
L. A. Willette
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 6, 2004, from 6 - 9 PM
Admission is free.
Born in Manhattan, L.A. Willette
cultivated his prowess as an abstract
expressionist and has since crossed over into the more figurative
aspects of
expressionism.
After graduating from the State University at New Paltz, New
York, he
started a painting co-operative and gallery at The Westbeth
Theatre Center
in Manhattan. Upon visiting his studio at Westbeth, Elaine
De Kooning said,
"If Bill (De Kooning) was still doing his women paintings,
he'd be doing
them like yours."
Willette's penchant for defining the grace and sexuality of
the human
female, has led him to the further investigation of the raw
strength of the
modern woman. The respect for this "power" he shows
in these charged works
is underscored by his distinct use of paint, and collage elements
in a
cohesive dialog between the energy of painting, and the material
of the
paint. "I don¹t paint the female form, I paint the female."
His works are represented by Art @ Large in New York, and
galleries in
Paris, London, Chicago, Long Island, and South Beach, Miami.
Willette has
had work purchased by collectors from every continent on earth
except
Antarctica. |

Danish design and style permeate these ravishing
paintings by Jorn Mobius. Superbly executed in brilliant

surroundings. The men are fully clothed, but the sex appeal
of their toned bodies still seeps through the drapes of
their exquisite attire.
Jorn Mobius has worked as an artist in Denmark, Germany

"Eroto ~ To the Prurient
Interest"
Featuring the images of
R. C. Hörsch
| Historically there exists
a division between the polite “celebrations of the human
form” considered to be legitimate art and the more graphic
depictions of sexual activity considered to be pornography.
To the Prurient Interest asks viewers to individually
decide and vote on the exact point at which they feel this
boundary between art and pornography is crossed.
Comprised of one hundred ninety-seven works and spanning
over six hundred feet of gallery space, R. C. Hörsch’s
To the Prurient Interest is arguably the largest one-artist
exhibition of erotic-sexual images within recent memory. |

Freek Weidema |
| An exciting investigation
of the male nude, in bronze and on paper. Freek Weidema
has had a lifelong passion for the nude male. He has always
been busy sketching and painting the male form, and has
been casting bronze figures for the last 10 years. After
graduating in Architecture at the Academy for the Visual
Arts (ABK) in Utrecht, he now lives and works on a boat
which used to be a freight barge.
His images are always taken directly from life, a fact which
is immediately apparent from the results. His works are
both evocative and provocative. Although the artist’s intention
is clearly to engage the viewers fantasies, he contrasts
this with simple, disarming poses. Freek has an extensive
history of exhibitions across Germany and the Netherlands,
and has exhibited at Mister B Berlin, Mister B Amsterdam
and at Amsterdam’s Faubourg Gallery. |

Artwork: Marc DeBauch |
Opening reception: Thursday, April 8, 6 - 9 PM
Paintings and drawings from
the 1960’s by two legendary artists: Etienne (Dom
Orejudos, also known as Etienne) and Luger (Jim French,
also known as Luger, Arion, and Colt). These giants of homoerotic
art, were published in many "mens" magazines of
the period.
Michael Kirwan, sees his work as a pictorial history
of homosexual norms and values. Infused with color and detail,
his drawings depict many ages, ethnicities and body types,
and are widely published in both gay & straight magazines
alike.
Marc DeBauch works in oils, gouache, and colored
pencils, portraying a wide range of sexual interests, which
include masculine men immersed in sexual fantasies -- dressed
in leather, fetish wear and uniforms. Marc's work has been
widely exhibited throughout the US & Europe.
Kim Hanson, a native New Yorker, has been photographing
nudes for almost 20 years. His work has been published in
four anthologies of nudes, (Male Bonding 1 &
2, Beasts and Uniforms), and widely exhibited
throughout the US. |

"Erotic Valentines"
Featuring: Laurel Griffy
Caprio - Amy Blue - Byuck Song Lee

"No Pockets" by Laurel Griffy Caprio
Artists Reception: Sunday, February 15, 4:00 - 6:30
PM
Curated by Johnes Ruta
Laurel Griffy Caprio
"My watercolor ladies are wonderfully full of life and fun.
Their self-confidence radiates through layers of painted flesh,
without makeup and fancy clothes. Bright colors and subdued
lights work together to create individual expression. The
rich tones and subtle strokes of watercolor convey intimacy
and sensuality."
"I use a limited color palette, introducing no more than 1
or 2 vibrant colors to create a background or mood. The additional
colors thrust each subject to the forefront and provide greater
dimension within the painting." "Real beauty is what love
perceives. A mother's child sees the most beautiful woman
in the world. A spouse cherishes their wife and looks adorningly
upon her. A loving companion looks past the outward appearance
of their confidant and is proud to be called "best friend.
This is my art." Laurel Griffy Caprio has exhibited her work
in several New York City venues, including the 2003 Tom of
Finland Erotic Art show at the Gay & Lesbian Center and
will be featured at New York University's LGBT Student Center
in March 2004.
Amy Blue
"Creativity is like a runaway horse-" says Amy Blue. "You
just try to hold on tight and love the ride." Amy's explicitly
sexy and often funny oil paintings were shown at the 2001
Erotic Art Fair at the NY Gay & Lesbian Community Center,
and at the "Erotica" show at the Hygienic Arts Cooperative
in New London, February 2002, along with the work of Wendy
Gell, Eric Hammer, and Lou Joachim Martins.
"People ask me if I've had the experiences that I paint, and
I have to say, 'not most of them.'" The influences of Chagal
and Gustav Klimpt are apparent Amy's art. "My work is like
'Matisse takes a vacation at the Kajuraho Temple in India,'
where the erotic statues stand so proud." Amy is swept along
by events as if in a whirlwind. "Each is an oil painting on
canvas, a narrative of characters in historical, mythical,
Biblical, and fantastic settings," done in sensual brush strokes,
with a soft and glowing color palate: lovely women and seductresses
of history, beautiful lesbian couples and threesomes indulged
with fruit and flowers, or whimsical scenes of spanking. Each
painting is a window into the wit, wonder, and exaltation
of Eros.
Byuck Song Lee
Byuck Song Lee, 25, who lives in Seoul, Korea, is a graduate
student at the Art Institute of Boston, and comes from an
artistic family. His oil on canvas artworks sometimes have
an acrylic base, and show the strength of figurative draftsmanship.
His partially autobiographical paintings of single and double
figures focus on the essence of the female, and revolve around
the personal psychological and sexual drama between artist
and his model. |

"Perfect Body, Perfect Soul"
PART 2: Featuring the photos
of Joseph Caprio

Photo: Joseph Caprio
Deiter's Body Project project on aging gracefully
continues.
It's encouragement for men of any age to train their body.
| At the age
of 50, after having worked many years in the field of basic
research and philosophy, Dieter, a doctor, philosopher,
writer and sportsman, discovered that the male body has
been neglected in western societies by fundamentalistic
religious systems for centuries.
"Dieter got in touch with me after having
seen my portfolio in BLUE and he proposed a shooting which
I accepted in view of the many other artists involved in
the project. He sent me a few examples of images and I was
surprised to see his body in light of his age and the willingness
to pose nude. I thought and I still think that he an incredible
personality. The more images I see, the more chance I had
to know Dieter and be facinated by his consistent advancement
of the project."

Leather and Fetish Company
presents:
"Surrender and Salvation"
Featuring the works of
Richard Cascioli
| Cascioli’s themes portray
what lies hidden behind our armor: the intimate fight of
the soul to be set free from its bondage. His work expresses
the intervention of the divine in the subject’s reclamation,
depicting cycles of physical bondage, resistance, surrender
and salvation.
His bold use of steel and iron as extended
canvasses is derived from a fascination with metal shields
from the Medieval period, and the struggle with the exterior
and interior forces of darkness which that period mirrors
for us in the present time. |

| "September
10, 2001 was a great day. That morning I caught the biggest
fish of my life. That afternoon I had a new grandchild and
was photographed for a poster at Coney Island. That evening
I was at a charity auction for Friends in Deed at Christies
NYC. The auction, 'Icons and Legends', was hosted by Richard
Avedon and was a star-studded event, if there ever was one.
I was especially pleased when I saw the auction catalog
had my artwork listed as 'priceless.' Not bad for a kid
from the Bronx, I thought.
"After cocktails with old and new friends, my agent Les
Barany, my date for the evening, Dragonfly, and I stepped
outside onto Rockefeller Center for a few quick photos.
It was now September 11 and the rain had stopped. The city,
my city, was clear, clean and wonderful. I went home to
bed. When I awoke that morning of September 11, I was on
15th Street and 7th Avenue. All hell broke lose. Smoke,
sirens, fighter jets in the air and debris flying all over
the place.
"This was not September 10th anymore! When I got home to
Connecticut I did what most of the country did - stayed
glued to the television to see over and over and over again
what I just saw live. To keep my sanity I picked up a pencil
and started to sketch - and sketch I did. I sat in the same
chair for seven months, seven days a week, eighteen hours
a day. This series is a result of those seven months.

presents a:
Lifecasting Workshop
With artist Philip Hitchcock

Lifecasting or bodycasting is
an exciting and powerful art form that has been used for centuries
to immortalize its subjects. Today's high-tech methods are streamlined
and accurate enough to duplicate fingerprints, wrinkles, even
eyelashes! And, unlike a photograph or painting, lifecast sculptures
show the subject from every angle.
In this wild and fun workshop, internationally known artist
Philip Hitchcock will cover the history and basics of lifecasting
and demonstrate his amazing techniques using a live model. Then,
in a hands-on lab, you and a partner will learn how to use a
special fast drying impression medium to make lifecast sculptures
of each other (approximate size 14" x 14") and get expert tips
on how to decoratively color, embellish and display your artwork.
Hitchcock's World Wrestling Statues are currently on
display in Times Square, and his work will be seen on the upcoming
Fox TV series The Swan.
This is extremely hands-on. Please dress accordingly and be
prepared to get messy! Class size is limited. |

Art @ Large
presents:
"Can't Pet This"
Photographic works by Pet
Silvia
Artist: Pet Silvia
Opening reception February 5, 6:00 - 9:00 PM
| Pet Silvia
is a performance artist who performs silently from within
his studio using gender issues as the basis of much of his
art. The longing to be the 'pretty girl' in the magazines
is partly to blame for this inspiration, but also to be
the artist’s model in a great work of Fine Art.
The works all begin with photography, and then are explored
through a myriad of ‘machine’ processes. From xerographic
and laser prints transferred to canvas with acrylics &
oils, to digital Giclée on canvas and type ‘C’ prints. Of
particular note is a unique sculptural series of 3D dioramas,
built entirely from scratch with Pet as the inhabitant of
several rooms, not unlike the settings in a dollhouse.
Questions are raised regarding perceptions as to what is
definable as a 'body-beautiful’, and the stereotypes that
hardly any woman in real life can ever hope to attain. Silvia
shows us that we're all really beautiful, if we can just
not take ourselves so seriously. That, with sexuality and
the desire confessed, leads us to think about our own perceptions
of self and what turns us on. |

Western Project
presents:
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Baby

Artist: Tom of Finland (1988)
Opening reception January 3, 6:00 - 9:00 PM
| Western Project is proud to
present 14 artists in the first show of 2004. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,
Baby is a group exhibition presenting a constellation of
images -- a miasma of contemporary sensibilities addressing
nature, humor, eros, violence and culture. The premise of
‘the garden of Eden’, filtered through the 17 minute opus
by Iron Butterfly in 1968, was a psychedelic whirlwind --
a kind of extended atmosphere pulsing and punctuated as
a sensual, rhythmic, altered reality.
Artists include: Anthony Ausgang, Ron Athey, Carole Caroompas,
Nathalia Edenmont, Sush Machida Gaikotsu, Bob Mizer/AMG,
Catherine Opie, Richard Renaldi, Joe Schmelzer, Timothy
Tompkins, Holly Topping, Wayne White, and Eve Wood.
A Tom of Finland study will be exhibited.

The Dirty Show
5th Annual Detroit Erotic
Art Exhibition
$10.00 Donation
| In five years, The Dirty
Show has grown from an underground Valentine’s happening
to the largest erotic art show in the State of Michigan.
Last year’s show at the MONA (Museum Of New Art) was said
to have the largest attendance of any art opening in the
area and landed the show on local TV news shows with the
old "Art or Pornography?" argument.
Glenn Barr, Niagara, Mark Dancey, Tracee Miller, Camilo,
and over 100 other painters, photographers and artisans
will be touting their titillating talents for your pleasure
and amusement and hopefully your purchase. Work ranges
from mild "Grandma Safe" erotica to hardcore art that
will leave you thinking, "Somebody is Going To Burn In
Hell For This".
Live entertainment includes two "count-em, two" burlesque
troupes (Hell’s Belles and SPAG), erotic poetry (including
John Sinclair, Jimmy Doom and a naked nubile or two),
Dee Dee Sharpe and her boa, erotic clog dancing, and much,
much more. |

Our monthly drawing workshop.
Artists, plan to attend!
| Artists who ventured out last Sunday into the
cold afternoon were rewarded by a warm and intimate environment
and two dynamic models. We were able to draw without interruption.
Our models broke all barriers to make the poses sensual and
erotic. All agreed that it was the best session ever.
This month we have Renato (pictured above) and Roberto modeling
for us.
Be sure to join us again in March for two more dynamic models,
refreshments, and the company of fellow artists. |
