OCTOBER 6, 7, 8, AND 9, 2005

The Foundation Bestows

The 11th Annual Tom of Finland Foundation Erotic Art Fair Weekend will take place October 6, 7, 8, and 9, 2005. The weekend begins on Thursday with the Opening Reception for Girls Who Do - The Illustration of Michael Kirwan at The Erotic Museum.

Opening festivities continue with an Artists Reception on Friday evening, featuring a newly-curated exhibition of three floors of artworks from the Foundation’s Permanent Collection. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served.

The Erotic Art Fair, co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Finland in Los Angeles, the City of West Hollywood, the City’s Lesbian & Gay Advisory Board, and the West Hollywood Convention and Visitors Bureau, is open to the public during the day, both Saturday and Sunday, in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park. The Fair will include an exhibit on some of the many artists whose careers the Foundation has boosted in its first 20 years.

On both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, at the Fair, panel discussions and life drawing demos, with artists and models, will be featured.

At the Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, the 2005 Lifetime Achievement and Cultural Icon Awards will be presented, and an induction into our Erotic Artist Hall of Fame. In addition to the presentation of these awards, the dinner will also feature the announcement of the winners of the 2005 Emerging Erotic Artist Contest, meant to encourage up-and-coming erotic artists.

The Weekend serves as a fundraising event for the Foundation, and provides a unique opportunity for erotic artists from around the world to display and sell their work to the public. The educational value of the Fairs is enormous: for many, artists and public alike, the Fairs provide the only venue in which erotic art can be displayed, enjoyed, and purchased. The Foundation’s staff curates the Fair, to ensure a variety of styles and media.

The 2005 Erotic Art Fair will host more than 80 artists, from all over the United States, and from several foreign countries. Virtually every medium is represented: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and digital work. The Foundation strives to include work representing all genders and sexual orientations. When the Foundation presented the first Fair in 1995, it was the only event of its kind; the Fair continues to be the largest event in the world dedicated to providing erotic artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work to the public.

This year's Award Winners announced!

The Tom of Finland Foundation has announced the recipients of its three major annual awards. The awards, acrylic sculptures designed by artist Philip Hitchcock, will be presented at the Foundation’s annual Awards Banquet, to be held on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood. The Banquet is part of the Foundation's 11th Annual West Hollywood - Los Angeles Erotic Art Fair Weekend.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Edward Lucie-Smith of London. An art critic, historian, poet, and photographer, Mr. Lucie-Smith is widely regarded as the world’s most prolific and most widely-published writer on art, with more than sixty books on art to his credit. Several of his works, including Movements in Art since 1945, Visual Arts of the 20th Century, and A Dictionary of Art Terms, and Art Today are used as standard texts throughout the world. Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Hugh Hefner, Larry Flynt, Benedikt Taschen, Durk Dehner, and Charles Leslie and Frederic Lohman.

The Foundation will bestow the Cultural Icon Award on artist and activist Ivy Bottini of West Hollywood. Ms Bottini was a founder of the first chapter of the National Organization for Women, and designed its national logo in 1969. She has been a graphic artist, a performer, and a longtime community activist, and currently serves as Co-Chair of the City of West Hollywood’s Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board. The Cultural Icon Award is presented to an individual whose career achievements and personal qualities combine to make him or her a role model. Previous recipients include heavy metal rocker Rob Halford; author and filmmaker Clive Barker; and social critic Camille Paglia.

The 2005 inductees into the Erotic Artist Hall of Fame are Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard of Paris, who work professionally under the name “Pierre et Gilles.” The pair met in 1976, and began their formal work as Pierre et Gilles in 1978. Their collaboration, which involves intricately staged and hand-retouched photographs, has led to exhibitions at Paris’s Musee d’Art Moderne and Centre Georges Pompidou, the Musee d’Art Contemporain in Montreal, and many other venues. Previous inductees to the Hall of Fame include H. R. Giger, Bill Schmelling aka The Hun, Michael Kirwan, and, posthumously, Tom of Finland and Herb Ritts.
