New books arrive at TOM House for launch!

Tom of Finland: Life and Work of a Gay Hero
Arrives in time for the Fair!

Months upon months of dedication has come to fruition. The new Tom Anthology went to press and has arrived at Foundation for its launch at the West Hollywood / Los Angeles Erotic Art Fair Weekend..

Most TOM books, filled with his drawings, let Tom's artwork speak for itself. This one is different.

Fans of Tom's artwork won't be disappointed, though — it's loaded with his art from age 8 and upwards. Many images have been carefully restored, and faithfully reproduced.

But this book tries to answer the question: "Who was Tom of Finland?" From early childhood, through his war years, and beyond. An icon? Yes. Beneath it, the man.

The Foundation Thanks the Artist
For this Contribution

As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation’s original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response.

Today the Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.

Tom of Finland Foundation thanks the artist for this contribution.

It goes without saying that art, creativity and all things fabulous come with being Queer. For our community, the arts were one of the only outlets we had to freely be ourselves without the judgment of a puritanical society. Our contributions in the arts have shaped greater society more than we are given credit for ó Gay men and women gave society style, aesthetics, and glamour. And it was through art that our community was given identity and pride.

Through the works of Tom of Finland, many Gay men throughout the world were shown an alternative to what larger society had appropriated for Gays. At the time that Tom began his life as an artist, society viewed Homosexuality as a disease to be reviled and shunned. As a Gay man, Tom saw through that and defied what society had set forth, creating imagery of happy, healthy men fornicating openly. Through his drawings, Tom gave gay men an ideal to aspire to and they took that and turned it into reality. He also paved the way for other artists to find the courage to share their work with the world. Exhibitions of Tomís drawings brought other erotic artists together to showcase their work and an erotic art fair was born.

We are fortunate to live in a city raises the bar and celebrates art in all its forms. Los Angeles holds the distinction of being the first city to ever hold an erotic art fair. Let us not take any of that for granted. This year the City of West Hollywood is proud to support Tom of Finlandís 17th Annual Erotic Art Fair on Sept. 28 Ė 30. We invite all to come and engage in the beauty and discourse that the Fair has to offer. Declare your support and pride and leave your inhibitions behind, for to live a proud and free life is art.
