|TOM OF FINLAND FOUNDATION|
OVER A QUARTER CENTURY OF DEDICATION TO PROTECTING, PRESERVING AND PROMOTING EROTIC ART.
|MUSING FROM THE
ON TO THE NEW MILLENNIUM
1999 was a proud year of accomplishment. Our goal of having Tom of Finland's art appreciated by a wide audience was greatly furthered, as tens of thousands attended exhibitions of his work in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Brussels, Paris and Jyvalaskya, in his native Finland.
We staged an Emerging Erotic Artist Exhibition in San Francisco, providing hitherto unknown artists a wonderful opportunity to show their works for the first time. The Foundation also sponsored the 4th Emerging Erotic Artist Contest, which culminated with a 3 month exhibit at the Tom of Finland Gallery in Los Angeles. Thousands of art lovers attended and enjoyed the shows.
The Foundation is in the process of expanding it's number of active members, and currently enjoys an increase larger than in preceding years. The royalties generated by the Tom of Finland Clothing Company continue to grow, and subscribers bought more art than in previous years from the Erotic Gallery by Mail, through which the Foundation offers the work of various artists for sale.
In August and September, the Tom of Finland Gallery hosted the first exhibition of selected works from the Foundation's permanent collection, and in October more than 1,000 guests attended the annual Erotic Art Fair Weekend and purchased more than $41,000.00 in works from the exhibiting artists.
It was quite a year, but our goals for 2000 are equally ambitious:
To expand our operations budget by $25,000.00
To raise $20,000.00 towards the museum fund
To begin our digital database for the Archive Department
To find a new department head for the Archive Department
To find a computer person to undertake the digital transferring of art
To provide all erotic artists with a venue for displaying and selling their work
To arrange exhibitions of our erotic art collection for museums and facilities worldwide.
Some of the highlights for the coming year:
Tom of Finland's artwork will be featured in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's California 2000 Exhibition
Dirty Pictures, a scholarly book on Tom of Finland, will be published by St. Martin's Press
An exhibition of Tom's work at the Armory Show in New York City in cooperation with the Mark Moore Gallery
Fundraisers for the Foundation in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas
Tom's Bar, the annual celebration of Tom's birthday, to be held on May 7th in Los Angeles
The 2000 Erotic Art Fair Weekend, this year running October 13th - 15th.
I'm sure as the year progresses many more opportunities for joining in the festivities will become available, so watch upcoming editions of the Dispatch for more exciting news and updates.

This March, St. Martin's Press will publish Dirty Pictures by Micha Ramakers. This book takes a scholarly approach to the works of Tom of Finland, analyzing the relation between Tom's art and Western culture within the confines of contemporary art criticism and gender politics. It follows how one man, drawing in a small apartment in Helsinki, affected gay men around the world, and how our culture has reacted to what Tom put into his men. There are many controversial views expressed in the book, not all of them positive.
The book is of worth in showing the increasing interest of the fine art establishment in work like Tom's that was formerly exiled from its consideration. The mere existence of this book shows that Tom's work not only broke down the oppressive gay stereotypes of the past, but also the elitist dogma restricting what can be considered great art. And the 80-some images of Tom's work in the book, illustrating the author's arguments, are an added bonus. Dirty Pictures will be available in March, through the Tom of Finland Company or at your favorite bookstore.
Another book which may be of interest is
Erotic Drawing, a comprehensive retrospective
of the works of the great French artist Jean Cocteau.
Edited by Annie Guedras, the book contains
hundreds of pages of Cocteau's deceptively simple line
drawings, black and white, and color sketches. How
Cocteau was able to capture such a great amount of
feeling with just a few lines is amazing to see! This
oversize book (9.5" x 11.5") is published by
Taschen, and well worth adding to your collection. It
retails for $29.99 and is available through the Tom of
Finland Company, and at most major book stores.
|A SAD MOMENT
Since our last Dispatch the art world has lost 2 of its heroes. We are sad to inform you that we have lost Lon of New York and Japanese Erotic Artist, Sadao Hasegawa. Our condolences to the families and friends of our comrades.
