Slava Mogutin
SLAVA MOGUTIN is a New York-based Russian-American multimedia artist, author and filmmaker exiled from Russia for his outspoken queer writings and activism. A third-generation writer and self-taught journalist and photographer, he became the first Russian to be granted political asylum in the US on the grounds of homophobic persecution. Informed by his bicultural literary and dissident background, Mogutin's work celebrates diversity and nonconformism encompassing the themes of displacement and identity; transgression and transfiguration of masculinity and gender crossover; urban youth subcultures and adolescent sexuality; the clash of social norms and individual desires; the tension between attachment and disaffection, hate and love. He is the author of seven books of writings in Russian, as well as three monographs of photography, Lost Boys (2006), NYC Go-Go (2008), and Bros & Brosephines (2017), and two illustrated collections of poetry, Food Chain (2014), and Pictures & Words (2017).

FILM SCREENINGS: BORN TO RAISE HELL and
IT IS NOT THE PORNOGRAPHER THAT IS PERVERSE

7 – 10p

Born to Raise Hell (1974)

6th October – Born to Raise Hell 1974 (85 mins)
The standard that all Gay SM films are judged by around the world. The SM is authentic: whipping, pissing, beating, shaving, fisting, dildos, clothes pins, bondage, groveling, verbal abuse, defiled asses. The men are very masculine, very real. Sidney Charles of Drummer magazine wrote, “What can you say about a movie that’s so hot it needs to be handled with asbestos gloves… The movie to see with someone you love to beat, or be beaten by.” Legendary filmmaker Fred Halsted said, “The best SM film I’ve ever seen”.

Roger Earl
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2015

ROGER EARL was born and raised on the Mojave Desert in Ludlow California, a truck stop half way between Needles and Barstow. At 7 years old he had truck drivers coming in and asking HIM to clean their pipes. From Ludlow Roger moved to San Bernardino CA to go to junior college, and driving to a bar in Covina where he was arrested for Line Dancing with Men. Then he started driving to a bar in Hollywood, where he was arrested for Line Dancing with Men. Roger became Associate Producer of the Dean Martin Show, and finally his Road Manager. He met his lifetime best friend, Terry LeGrand, at NBC, who he partnered with in making Born to Raise Hell.

Roger was always very active with the AIDS Quilt and was asked by the City of West Hollywood to help put together a quilt for all of their employees that had succumbed to AIDS. He’s done work with City X1 Youth Group and Senior Services, the AIDS Walk, as well as at the APLA Food Pantry. He has also worked on various political campaigns including No on 8.

After Dean Martin died, Tom of Finland was fortunate to get Roger to work with the Company and the Foundation. Roger always said he came in contact with, and worked together with, some of the most wonderful people he ever met. I know his time at Tom of Finland was educational, enjoyable, exciting, and even frustrating at times. Tom of Finland was so lucky to have spent Roger working here for 13 years.

FOR YEARS OF PIONEERING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ART AND CULTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY

It is Not the Pornographer That is Perverse (2018)

6th October – It is Not the Pornographer That is Perverse 2018 (69 mins)
An omnibus film comprised of four short films with interconnected themes and overlapping characters. “Diablo in Madrid” is inspired by the Pasolini short film “La Terra vista dalla Luna”. “Uber Menschen” finds a professor visiting Madrid and contemplating killing himself when an Uber driver talks him out of it. “Purple Army Fiction” is a reworking of certain ideas developed in LaBruce’s feature film The Raspberry Reich. “Fleapit” is an homage to films that depict people having sex in movie theatres, from Lamberto Bava’s Demons to Frank Perry’s Last Summer and beyond.

SPECIAL GUEST: Director, Bruce LaBruce.

Win a poster signed by the director!

Included with ticket to Festival.
